Australia is the world’s largest exporter of animals for slaughter, with the sheep trade to the Middle East involving around 4 million animals annually.

Sheep are transported long distances by road before being loaded onto vessels bound for the Middle East.  The conditions these vessels are cramped and often hot. Every year tens of thousands of sheep die on the ship voyage due to disease, illness or because the don’t recognise the unfamiliar pellets - their only source of food for the entire journey - as food.

Many more suffer, but survive.  For many of those that survive the sea voyage a
For many of those that survive the trip, a terrible fate awaits them in the hands of countries that have no or unenforced animal welfare laws.

Video evidence of the transport and handling of Australian sheep shows deplorable conditions.  It is not uncommon for sheep to be transported in car boots and on roof racks in extreme temperatures.

There is an alternative to this cruel trade.  Australia already has a significant trade in chilled Halal-certified meat to the Middle East, and it is growing every year.  This trade in meat from animals that are humanely transported and slaughtered in Australia also means more jobs in processing for Australians.

The only solution to protect Australian animals from this unnecessary cruelty is to end the live export trade once and for all.

Help us to put a stop to the cruelty of live exports.
