In April, popular entertainer and animal lover Kerri-Anne Kennerley began helping us in our campaign to end bear baiting, launching her own Hope for Bears fundraising appeal. Today, as the appeal comes to a close we want to say a big thank you to Kerri-Anne, her team and most of all, to all those watching for raising an amazing $19,029!
All funds raised will go towards our work to help bears like Chowti...
Blind in both eyes, 6 year old Chowti spent more than four years being tied up in front of a crowd of thousands, left unable to defend herself, while trained dogs were set upon her for ‘entertainment.’
“Now I’ve been in the entertainment industry for over 30 years and let me tell you, this is not entertainment,” Kerri-Anne said.
Chowti is one of the lucky ones, because thanks to our partners, the BRC, she is now safe, well-fed and well-cared for in Balkasar Sanctuary. She still moves uncertainly around her new enclosure, with no sight to guide her she relies heavily on her sense of smell to explore. But since rescue late last year, Chowti’s health has improved dramatically, she is learning to forage for her own food, make her own shelter, and has developed great interest in investigating the acacia shrubs around her new home.
Chowti now has the chance to become a bear again in Balkasar Sanctuary, but there are still around 70 more suffering in bear baiting events across rural Pakistan.
There is still much work to do and we are 100% committed to ending this cruelty. Now, because of Kerri-Anne and all those who donated to Hope for Bears we are one step closer. Thank you!
